Our night works team has successfully completed traffic management for a major highway upgrade project. Over 12 weeks of overnight closures were managed safely and on schedule, demonstrating the value of experienced crews and thorough planning.
Project Overview
The project involved significant pavement rehabilitation works on a major arterial route carrying high traffic volumes. With daily traffic counts making daytime closures impractical, the client required comprehensive night works traffic management to allow construction to proceed while minimising disruption to commuters and commercial traffic.
Key Project Details
- Duration: 12 weeks of night shifts
- Scope: Multiple lane closures across a 5km section
- Hours: 8pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday nights
- Team: Rotating crews of 6-8 traffic controllers per shift
Challenges and Solutions
High-Speed Environment
The highway's 100km/h speed limit required extended taper lengths and advance warning distances. We deployed variable message signs several kilometres ahead of the work zone to give drivers ample notice of changed conditions ahead.
Variable Work Zones
As the paving works progressed along the route, our traffic management setup had to adapt nightly. Our crews became expert at efficient setup and packdown, minimising the time required to establish safe work zones each night.
Weather Events
Several nights of heavy rain required adjustments to both the construction program and traffic management. Our team coordinated closely with the contractor to ensure safe operations in reduced visibility conditions, including additional lighting and reduced work zone speeds.
Fatigue Management
Extended night shift operations require careful fatigue management. We rotated crews appropriately and monitored team members for signs of fatigue throughout the project. No fatigue-related incidents occurred.
Results
The project was completed on schedule with an excellent safety record:
- Zero incidents: No traffic-related incidents within the work zone
- On-time delivery: All 60+ night shifts completed as scheduled
- Minimal complaints: Very few community complaints despite the extended duration
- Client satisfaction: Positive feedback from the construction contractor
What Made It Work
Success on a project of this scale comes down to several factors:
- Experienced crews: Controllers who understand highway operations and can work confidently at night
- Good planning: Detailed TMPs that anticipated the various scenarios we'd encounter
- Communication: Regular coordination with the contractor and clear communication between team members
- Reliability: Crews who turned up on time, every night, ready to work
